My biggest category, these games were fleeting moments and I'll probably forget about them within the next couple weeks.
Virtua Cop 2
(Dreamcast)
light gun arcade port with 'choose your path' stages. i must have killed 200 robbers by myself
House of the Dead
(Sega Saturn)
light gun horror games have a high floor, but theres not really a reason why you would play this over the second game
Daytona USA Championship
(Sega Saturn)
yep they ported this pretty well here, didnt they?
Densha de GO! 2
(Dreamcast)
this is a train simulator game that has it's own train-style conductor controller (which I don't have). arcade trappings means fun over realism. a lot to process, still
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
(Dreamcast)
survival horror with a dual campaign (later copied by Resident Evil 9). surprisingly creepy atmosphere and sound design
Phantasy Star Online
(Dreamcast)
the first console MMO, but really it's a Diablo-like loot experience. technically you can still play this online and chat using the keyboard, but playing solo is definitively more boring.
Fighters Megamix
(Sega Saturn)
this is a Virtua Fighter crossover with another fighting game, but performance was a bit lesser.
Sonic Jam
(Sega Saturn)
Sonic didn't get a 'real' game on the saturn (the cancellation of sonic xtreme is an interesting read BTW), but they got a repackage of the three genesis games. they also built a one-world 3D level in here that you can run around in. the whole thing is a bit of a bummer
18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker
(Dreamcast)
outrageously over the top racing game (arcade port), perhaps a satire of americana. I did like the southern rock radio station.
Panzer Dragoon
(Sega Saturn)
launch title rail shooter and perhaps the tech demo for the saturn. play it for 10 minutes and then just play the sequels instead.
LOL: Lack of Love
(Dreamcast)
guide your little organism through their evolutionary stages by working with other bugs & stuff. this gets a distinction of being incredibly unusual and beautifully rendered/scored. the gameplay though is a slog and a mystery unless following an online guide
Segagaga
(Dreamcast)
save SEGA by recruiting burnt out developers and re-inspiring the corporate workforce in this pokemon-style RPG. might have just been the translation but I found this to be off puttingly pessimistic (perhaps rightfully so - the dreamcast was discontinued just two days after release)
Armada
(Dreamcast)
asteroids but presented as an MMO with upgrades. I think this was actually developed as an online experience, would have served it well
Bangai-O
(Dreamcast)
a slow player-controlled schmup. just completely unmemorable
Blast Chamber
(Sega Saturn)
move your teensy tiny little man around one-screen levels to get the gold and avoid the traps. I actually like oddities like this. I guarantee nobody is talking about blast chamber in 2026.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
(Dreamcast)
there are some souls-like ideas in this action game, but its sluggish and not particularly fun
AlienFront Online
(Dreamcast)
play as the aliens or the humans in this territory war multiplayer game (with voice chat!). trouble is finding a game and playing NPCs is not a high quality experience
